Thomas Chevrolet
Although the Thomas family’s involvement in the transportation industry started in 1860, when Valentine Thomas opened a blacksmith shop in Carrolltown, PA, it was up to Valentine’s son Clark, current CEO Mark Thomas’s great grandfather, to embrace the car business. Clark’s business sense told him that the “horseless carriage” would sweep the nation, so he signed a contract with Henry Ford in 1919 to sell automobiles in Carrolltown, PA. His son K.A. Thomas eventually opened a dealership in Bedford in 1939. Bedford had a strong appeal to K.A. for two reasons: The town was located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, one of the nation’s first “super highways.” And, since Bedford is located midway between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, many motorists stopped here. Under K.A.’s leadership, the company grew to include both the Oldsmobile and Cadillac lines. When K.A.’s son Bill – who is Mark’s father -- took over the business in 1968, he built a new facility on Route 220 to house the growing dealership. In 1983, Mark W. Thomas became the fourth generation to run the business. He expanded the Bedford dealership with the addition of the Subaru line in 1988 and the Geo line in 1989. Today, with the same business acumen that served his great grandfather Clark, Mark has positioned the company to become a prominent force throughout the region. Today the Thomas Automotive Family employs 200 people at its five dealerships and parts store. Subway
Subway was created back in 1965 by a man named Fred DeLuca in Bridgeboard, Connecticut. In 1974, Fred and his partner Dr. Peter Buck began to franchise the store. Jack Hemminger started Hemminger Mobile Home Service in 1972. The name was slightly changed to Hemminger Homes which is currently incorporated, owned and operated at the same location near Somerset by the Hemminger family. Hemmingers’ started out as a service company that set up and serviced homes. They also built a supply store for do it yourselfers, as well as their own use. Each year more is offered to help meet current needs. Their services included plumbing, general repairs heating, and accessories. Bedford Candies
Bedford Candies was founded in 1929 by George B. Sotirokos. The store became known for its quality chocolates and a famous 5 cent chocolate bar called the “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” The Yankee Doddle isn’t made today, but the store is still owned and operated by its third generation of Sotirokos’. Bedford County Humane Society
The Bedford County Humane Society receives no government funding and it not a United Way agency. Instead, the generosity of individual and corporate supporters allows the continued operation and growth of the many programs and services. The BCHS provides services for more than 1,000 animals each year. Pitt Theatre
The Pitt Theatre has been in continuous operation since 1939. Located in Bedford, Pennsylvania on Pitt Street, it is the longest continually run movie theatre in Pennsylvania. For over 69 years movie goers have been filling the Pitt's 390 seats. Pitt Theatre audiences have seen it all. Patrons watching Will Smith, Bruce Willis, and others on the screen today are in the same building as audiences who were viewing John Wayne, Katherine Hepburn, Errol Flynn, and James Dean for the first time. The theater was originally equipped to show silent movies. Silent movies were be accompained by live piano music, colored lights, and text breaks, not captions, during the film. The original colored lights are still there, hidden behind the modern screen. The seats are original. They have been updated with extra padding and new leather surfaces periodically, but have never been completly replaced. When the theater started in 1939 the seats were completely wooden!
